Chuck Campbell’s first experience with Bands of America was also his last performance as the director of the George Rogers Clark High School band of Winchester, Kentucky in 1978 at the Summer National Championship. Chuck then entered the business world until his return to teaching in 1990 with the North Hardin High School band in Radcliff, Kentucky. The North Hardin Band received both the Sudler Shield and Flag of Honor from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Both the George Rogers Clark and North Hardin Bands performed at the renowned Midwest Clinic under his direction.

Chuck was involved with Music for All as a clinician, a host at the National Festival and as a member of Bands of America’s advisory committee. His North Hardin marching band performed at many BOA Regional and Grand National Championships and was a Regional Champion. Although Chuck became known early in his career for his marching bands, his first love was concert music. The Music for All National Festival provided the perfect venue for Chuck’s desire to create life-changing experiences for students and directors. Under his direction, the North Hardin concert band and percussion ensemble were invited to perform at the National Concert Band Festival twice. In 2006, Chuck retired after 31 years as a public school band director.

Even though Chuck is no longer with us in body, his spirit, his laughter, and his ability to make an individual feel special remain. When he was diagnosed in April 2011 with pancreatic cancer, he expressed to his wife Judy that he had no bucket list and no regrets. The legacy of Chuck Campbell will always be with us – his passion, integrity and dedication to his students; his belief in life-long learning; his high expectations of his students; and the belief that everyone can achieve “The Impossible Dream” if one reaches for the stars.
