Ryan Johnstone is currently Director of Bands at Rouse High School in Leander, Texas. At Rouse, Mr. Johnstone conducts the Honor Band and provides instructional guidance for all facets of the Rouse Band program. Mr. Johnstone assists the marching band and serves as the music caption head. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Johnstone served as an assistant director at Rouse for three years. The Rouse Marching Band has been a finalist at BOA Austin Regional, a class champion at BOA San Antonio Super Regional, and a state finalist at the Texas State Marching Festival twice, placing 9th in 2017 and 4th in 2019.

Prior to teaching at Rouse, Mr. Johnstone was a head middle school director. Groups at both schools advanced to the TMEA State Honor Band Competition three times under his direction. Additionally, the Aledo Middle School Honor Winds were invited performers at the Midwest Clinic in 2013. 

Mr. Johnstone is an active guest clinician for other school music programs. He has been a guest conductor/teacher for the Baylor and Texas Christian University Summer Music Camps, has served on the brass staff for the Crossmen Drum Corps, and also works as a leadership facilitator for SASi. As an adjudicator, he’s served at marching and concert events throughout Texas, as well as Utah and Canada. In 2012, Mr. Johnstone was honored by Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Mu, being named “Texas Young Bandmaster of the Year.”

Mr. Johnstone is a graduate of the Curtis Institute and Yale University.
