Derek Smith is a Chemistry and Forensic Science Teacher at Northview High School in Grand Rapids, MI where he has been teaching for 24 years. He holds a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry and an M.Ed. Degree in Educational Technology. He is a widely respected adjudicator, designer, instructor, and clinician for marching bands and winter guards across Michigan and the Midwest. Derek has been the director and designer of the 22-time WGI Finalist Interplay Winter Guard since 1997 and has served as a clinician at the MFA Summer Symposium for over 22 years. He was also inducted into the Michigan Color Guard Circuit Hall of Fame in 2009. He marched in Forte’ Winterguard the Madison Scouts, and The Cadets of Bergen County. Over the years, Derek has also taught the Crossmen, the Blue Knights, and the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. He is excited to be back at the Summer Symposium in 2023 teaching the Color Guard Instructor Academy.
