Barry L. Houser is the Associate Director of Bands, Director of the Marching Illini & Athletic Bands, and Clinical Associate Professor of Music at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.

Responsibilities include conducting the Wind Orchestra, the administration of the Athletic Bands and serving as director of the 400-member Marching Illini. He teaches courses in instrumental conducting and other courses in the School of Music. He is a Leadership Coach for the Illinois Leadership Center and serves as faculty advisor for Phi Mu Alpha and Kappa Kappa Psi.

Houser served as Director of Bands, Associate Director of Bands, and Director of Athletic Bands at Eastern Illinois University. A native of Indiana, he was Director of Bands at NorthWood High School and before that, Assistant Director of Bands at Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Florida.

Bands under Houser have been part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on eight occasions, the NBC Today Show, NFL halftime shows, three tours of Ireland, and performances with Maynard Ferguson, Dallas Brass, Gregg Potter of the Buddy Rich Band, Canadian Brass, Boston Brass, Presidio Brass and Doug Yeo of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Houser is in frequent demand as a guest clinician throughout the United States. He has served on the staff of the Macy’s Great American Marching Band, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl Mass Band, and currently serves as the Artistic Director for the BRT Thanksgiving Parade of Bands at Walt Disney World. Houser is a contributing author for the marching band textbook The System and two editions of Teaching Music through Performance in Band. He has served on the Board of Directors for the National Band Association and currently serves as chair of the CBDNA Athletic Band Committee, Big Ten Band Director Association Chair of Athletic Bands, and President of the Smith Walbridge Clinics, one of the pioneer marching band leadership camps established in 1949.
