Matt Black

Matthew Black (Carmel, IN) is Associate Director of Bands, Director of Percussion, and Sound Designer at Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana. He is also the Audio Caption Manager and Sound Designer for The Cavaliers. Previously, Black served as the Sound Designer for the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps.
Black served as the Percussion Director and Designer for Marian Catholic High School from 2014 to 2019. He has spent time with Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps, Veritas Indoor Percussion Ensemble, and Cavaliers Indoor Percussion Ensemble.
Black holds a music education degree from Eastern Illinois University, where he also focused on electronic music composition and audio engineering.
Black was recently published in “The System” by Gary E. Smith. The System has been used as a collegiate-level marching band methods course curriculum for decades in university programs across the country.
Black is a frequent on MarchingArtsEducation.com and the Marching Round Table podcast, presenting on sound reinforcement, sound design, percussion design, and percussion pedagogy.
In his time away from teaching, Black writes and programs shows in all areas of the marching arts.
Black is a Yamaha Performing Artist. He currently lives in Carmel, Indiana, with his wife Amy, daughter, Julia, and their English Lab, Lydian.
