Michael Kumer is the Founder and CEO of Boards Made to Order, a boutique consulting practice that enables nonprofit boards – and nonprofit board members- to make a difference, leave a legacy, and change the world. Michael assists nonprofit boards to achieve excellence in all areas of governance, including planning, board member recruitment, effective board structure, and results-oriented board and committee meetings.
An enthusiastic speaker, Michael’s presentations have enjoyed a cumulative enrollment of thousands of board members, staff, and volunteers representing hundreds of nonprofit agencies. He is a frequent guest speaker on the topic of board leadership at regional and national conferences.
Michael previously served as the Executive Director of Duquesne University’s Nonprofit Leadership Institute (NLI) and Associate Dean of the University’s School of Leadership and Professional Advancement. He also served as the Program Director, Community Leadership Concentration, for Duquesne’s Master of Science in Leadership Program.
Trained originally as a musician, Michael served as the Dean of the School of Music at Duquesne University for fifteen years, prior to beginning his work in the field of nonprofit governance.
In addition to his work in the US, Michael’s international roster of clients includes those from Africa, the Caribbean, India, the South Pacific, and Russia.
Michael’s immediate family includes Wendy, his amazing wife of 39 years, her 93-year-old parents, Frank and Barbara Webb, and one adult daughter, Michaelene. Two adorable dogs, Bloomie and Boscov, rule his household.
