Matt McCready (Tulsa, Oklahoma) stubbornly began his journey in music education with piano lessons around age 5. This led to him starting on trombone in elementary band and ultimately evolving into his career as a band director and music educator. Considering that his mother was an elementary general music teacher, and both his father and uncle were band directors, he seemed destined to get into the “family business.” McCready owes his career to those who have mentored, shared, encouraged, advised, directed, and generally taught him everything he knows over the course of his career. The list is way too long to share here but includes so many special individuals he is eternally grateful for.
McCready maintains an active schedule around the country as a clinician, adjudicator, conductor, and musician. He is currently the Director of Fine Arts for Union Public Schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He previously served as the Director of Bands at Union and at Blue Valley Northwest High School in the Kansas City area. He is a two-time graduate of The University of Kansas, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education. He wrapped up his collegiate education by completing a doctorate in educational leadership from Oklahoma State University.
McCready is an avid Jayhawk and Chiefs fan, cheering both to multiple national/world championships of late! He is currently working toward visiting all 50 states, with only two currently remaining. Plans include checking the last two off by early 2025. McCready is also grateful to work in the same district as his wife Amy, who is the Director of Adult Education for the Union District.
