Born in New York City, Joseph began playing horn in the Dade County public school system and before beginning formal horn studies at the age of 17, had already made his Carnegie Hall debut as solo horn of the McDonald’s All American Band. Lovinsky attended the Peabody Institute under full scholarship as a student of Peter Landgren and continued horn studies as a student of Myron Bloom at the Curtis Institute of Music. He was later appointed horn teaching assistant at The Juilliard School and awarded the Irving Berlin Fellowship for Outstanding Orchestral Performance before completing horn studies with James Chambers and Jerome Ashby.

As a professional musician, Lovinsky has served as Principal Horn for the Miami City Ballet, the Israel Pops and later of the National Symphony of the Dominican Republic. Since 1997, Lovinsky has served as principal horn of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, after being hand selected by Barry Tuckwell. In 1999, he toured with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed in Europe, South America and Asia and with artists Leonard Bernstein, Midori, Dizzy Gillespie, Zubin Mehta, Isaac Stern, and Yo-Yo Ma.

A much sought after soloist/clinician, Joseph Lovinsky is on the faculty at Howard University continuing a tradition of musicianship he received from his mentors, Jerome Ashby, James Chambers and Robert Watt.
