Freddie Mendoza, has distinguished himself as one of the leading trombonists, euphoniumists and educators on the jazz scene today. He has performed across the United States and abroad, playing music ranging from the big band style of the 1940’s, to R&B and Latin jazz, sharing the stage with many of jazz music’s greats, including Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Printup, Marvin Stamm, Clark Terry, Bill Watrous, Rob McConnell, Bob Mintzer and Harry Connick, Jr., Michael Feinstein, Franki Valle, The Temptations and Lawrence Welk Orchestra to name a few.

Freddie’s discography of over 40 recordings covers a broad spectrum of styles and formats, and his performance, composition, and arranging skills have been featured on major labels including RCA/Victor Classics, Revolution Records, NoneSuch Records, Castle Rock Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox and Touchstone Pictures. His film credits include the soundtracks for Restored Me, Hope’s Happy Birthday, JetBlast, Bernie, The Alamo and The Newton Boys, even making a cameo appearance as an actor in the motion picture The Newton Boys. As a producer, he was responsible for many timeless albums, including projects such as Tracy Lamar Hancock’s latest release “Appasionata,” the self-titled project for Ernie Durawa’s “Los Jazz Vatos” as well as their 2015 release “El Jefe” on the Strange Brew label.

For over 20 years, Freddie has also make his mark in the field of Music Education. Formerly the Director of Jazz Studies at University of Indianapolis and Texas State University-San Marcos, he has most recently brought his talents to Ball State University as Assistant Professor of Trombone and Online Studies. Previous positions include Artistic Director of the San Antonio Youth Jazz Ensemble, Director of the Austin All-City Jazz Band and Assistant Director of the Disney All- American College Band. He is in high demand as a guest artist, clinician, adjudicator and guest director for jazz programs and jazz festivals around the nation.

Freddie is a voting member of the National Academy for Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammy Association), the Latin Academy for Recording Arts and Sciences (Latin Grammy Association), and has been recognized by the Clarksville/West-End Artist’s/Critics Poll as “Best Trombone Player in Austin” and “Best Arranger in Austin”. Freddie is a clinician/artist with Getzen Custom Series Trombones and holds a Bachelor’s in Music Performance from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master’s in Music Composition from Southwest Texas State University. He is currently a doctoral candidate in Music Education at Columbia University Teacher’s College.
